Do you know each day in the United States, 2,300 youth smoke their first cigarette while they are still shy of legal age to buy tobacco? And the numbers aren’t much better for alcohol and other age-restricted products. While these numbers may seem astounding; they represent the figures when the legal age to buy tobacco was 18 years. And we all know, that’s the old story. With the President signing the legislation on December 20, 2019 to raise the federal minimum age of sale of tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, from 18 years to 21 years, this number is surely going to soar, and along with it, the number of cases of selling to underage buyers. So, if you are a retailer who sells tobacco, alcohol or any other age restricted product, your responsibility and liability has increased many fold. As FDA and state fines have been raised up to $1,000 for a 1st offense, that’s not a chance you want to take for yourself and your business. Therefore, there is a need to be sure, more than ever before, about selling an age restricted product to a minor. While someone might argue that manual ID checking is good enough a measure and ensure compliance with the law, stats tell another story. According to a careful estimate, you have up to a 1 in 4 chance of selling tobacco to an underage buyer in most states of the US. As simple as it seems to verify someone's birth date on an ID, it’s far too easy to mis-calculate age, especially when your staff are tired and busy; or inadvertently sell to someone with a fake ID. Proper age verification today is too important a job to be left to manual checks.
That’s why we developed an easy to use ager verification solution that can be used by all businesses. To protect your business even more, we are rolling out the first FakeID detector in the country.
